Thara Penang is a focused Thai restaurant tucked in George Town at Lorong Prangin, where an experienced chef channels authentic recipes into beautifully presented plates. The menu highlights classic Thai favourites—miang kham starters, various tom yum options, har mok talay served in a young coconut, and a well-executed gaeng keow wan (green curry) with tender chicken thigh and Thai eggplant. Seafood features prominently and is treated with care, while desserts like mango sticky rice and red ruby provide a satisfying finish. Diners praise the genuine flavours, balanced aromatics and the chef’s background that shows in each dish; some find portions on the smaller side and prices slightly upmarket, but most agree the quality justifies the cost. The dining room’s soothing green tones create a relaxed atmosphere, though service can occasionally feel slow when the team is stretched. If you’re after an authentic Thai meal with attention to ingredients—especially seafood and well-layered curries—this is a dependable stop in Penang’s food map. It’s trusted by over 499 diners who come for the authentic taste and thoughtful execution.

3 weeks agoI was asking whether the restaurant was still accepting customers. I was told to wait for about 2 minutes, so I understood that we would be seated shortly. After bringing my child out of the vehicle and waiting, I was then informed that the kitchen had already closed. Unfortunately, my child was already hungry and becoming restless. After we were turned away and had to get back into the car to find another restaurant, he started crying and remained upset until we reached the next place. I would have appreciated being informed earlier if the kitchen was about to close.

a month agoWe ordered four dishes for dinner: Thai crispy pork knuckle, Thai coconut otak-otak, sambal stinky beans with shrimp and Ee San spicy soup. Overall, the food was delicious and up to Michelin-level standards. Our favorites were the Thai coconut otak-otak and the Ee San spicy soup both dishes were outstanding and exceeded our expectations. We will definitely revisit this restaurant again in the future.
