a month agoThis was an exceptionally thoughtful and meticulously crafted dining experience, truly showcasing the deliciousness of local ingredients to their fullest potential. The tasting menu cleverly utilized local Malaysian ingredients, presenting exquisite dishes that were both modern and deeply rooted in the region, brimming with creativity and truly remarkable. The most eye-catching dish was the deconstructed Penang Assam Laksa, perfectly preserving the dish's signature sour, spicy, and rich aromas while reinterpreting them with elegance and sophistication. This dish was both nostalgic and exciting, demonstrating convincing culinary skill. It was a perfect interpretation of local ingredients, exquisite craftsmanship, and stories. Each dish was imbued with meaning. It not only pursued flavor but also focused on presenting the ingredients at their best. My favorite was the ginger flower appetizer, which was simply stunning. So fresh and vibrant, it was a taste I had never experienced before. And good ending with the fresh dessert. Perfect! The restaurant also provided ingredient information cards on each table, explaining the origin of each ingredient and the story behind it. This added a touch of thoughtfulness and reflected their dedication to the dining experience. The staff were attentive, calm, and knowledgeable, clearly explaining each dish and ensuring a smooth and relaxed dining experience. The pace of service was perfectly timed, allowing for a comfortable yet focused dining experience. It was a pleasure to interact with FOH, which helped us better understand Penang culture and the chef's creative philosophy, appreciating their unique creations and contributing to the story of Gen in Penang. A beautiful representation of local produce, craftsmanship, and storytelling. Definitely a must try if you appreciate ingredient driven fine dining.

a month agoI recently dined here expecting a refined experience to match the premium pricing, but unfortunately it fell short in several key areas. While the food itself was acceptable, there were noticeable deviations from the listed ingredients, and substitutions were made without any prior notice. At this level, transparency and attention to detail are not optional—they’re expected. It was disappointing to be served dishes that didn’t align with what was described on the menu. I raised these concerns during the meal, and while the staff acknowledged them, the compensation offered—an infused oil that turned out to be expired since December 2025. It only added to the frustration rather than resolving it. Overall, the experience did not justify the cost, and the lack of communication and quality control was concerning. Regrettably, I would not recommend this establishment.

3 months agoGen is truly one of my favourite fine-dining spots in Penang. The setting is simple yet cosy, with clean lines and bright lighting, which I particularly appreciate because I like to see what I am eating! The space is intimate; in the three times we have visited, there have never been more than four tables, which means the service is always attentive and unhurried. Sherrie and her colleagues impressed me once again during our most recent visit. I had forgotten to mention earlier that we were celebrating a birthday; and that the birthday boy would be arriving in crown and cape! Despite the last-minute notice, she managed to arrange a cake and even played along with us, turning the evening into a wonderfully “royal” banquet. My husband and I have recommended Gen to friends and brought guests along because we genuinely enjoy the restaurant’s menu. We are also very impressed by this young, talented crew. When I noticed that there was a new menu this time, I was admittedly a little nervous, but my concerns proved completely unfounded. Kudos to the chefs, Anthony and Yau Chin, for their creative and thoughtful dishes. The presentation was not overly elaborate but beautifully pleasing, and most importantly, every course was delightful to the palate.

3 months agoThe FINEST DINING. Don't expect a RM498++ 11-courses set come with free drinks. Even a plain water will charge RM15 per pax. 11 courses. All are really very small portions. Cold coral grouper as starter. Beef noodles and soup were too salty. CurryThreadfin fish was the best. Only rice can be refillable but informed you when you've done everything. Desserts are very simple. Atmosphere is just normal. An open concept kitchen. Conclusion: Pay high-end to enjoy normal food.
