Il Bacaro sits comfortably in the heart of George Town, offering a warm, family-friendly Italian dining experience that locals and visitors keep returning to. Diners consistently praise the wood-fired pizza—crispy yet tender crust, fresh ingredients and balanced flavors—and signature mains like the mushroom risotto for its perfect texture and thoughtful seasoning. The menu blends comforting homestyle dishes with a few daily specials announced on their iconic blackboard, and the friendly staff take time to explain choices and recommend pairings, making the meal feel personal and unhurried. Expect a lively, buzzy atmosphere at dinner when families celebrate birthdays and groups gather; reservations are a smart idea to avoid the busiest times. Practical notes: the iced lemon tea is a welcome refresher in Penang’s heat, parking around the area can be tight, and the intimate lighting enhances the cosy vibe though it can feel dim for some. Small operational touches—like restroom capacity—have been mentioned by guests, but nothing that overshadows the consistently praised food and service. Trusted by over 1,400 diners, Il Bacaro is a dependable pick for those craving honest Italian flavors and a welcoming, convivial setting in the old town.

in the last weekNeither the food nor the service won us over. The appetizer (homemade bread and focaccia) was subpar; the plate I received for this was dirty. Our main courses (pizza and gnocchi) were mediocre at best. Not sure how this made it onto a Michelin list (when comparing it to other restaurants with Michelin ratings to which we have been).

in the last weekGreat place if you're missing Italian food after a long trip to Asia. Handmade pizza dough cooked in a wood-fired oven – I highly recommend it.

in the last weekA top tier lunchtime experience. We hadn't planned to come here, but it just so happened that we were in the area when our stomachs started to rumble! The service was incredible, the waiter was super attentive always ensuring that our water glasses were full and that we had everything we needed. I had the duck pasta and my partner who is celiac had the lamb; both were cooked to perfection and were full of flavour. I think we were the only people in there except for one other group so I can't really comment on the ambience! This was definitely a more indulgent and luxury dining experience for us but we enjoyed it thoroughly.
