Sambal 三佰 brings playful, inventive fusion to the streets of George Town, blending Nyonya and Teochew influences into dishes that surprise and delight. The menu features standout plates like the Udang Entangled — glass noodles in a rich Shaoxing-infused broth — and imaginative salads that pair green mango, beetroot, and toasted coconut with house dressings for a bright, textural bite. Drinks are part of the experience too: distinctive beverages such as a bunga kantan refresher add aromatic contrast, while the bar program serves approachable cocktails and well-crafted mocktails that complement the cuisine.
Service is frequently called out for being warm, knowledgeable, and genuinely helpful; staff members like Chris are noted for guiding guests through the menu and recommending dishes that turn first-time visitors into repeat patrons. The kitchen’s fusion approach results in plates that balance texture and flavor — grilled squid with stuffed pork and garlic aioli, Nyonya-style salads, and rich, wine-tinged noodle soups all showcase creativity rooted in regional tradition. Casual yet thoughtful plating, consistent seasoning, and an approachable price point make Sambal ideal for exploratory dinners or relaxed lunches.
With friendly hospitality, a convivial bar vibe, and a menu full of surprises, Sambal has earned the trust of over 500 diners who appreciate a fresh take on local flavors. in the last weekThe salt and pepper chicken wings were really good. The skin was crispy with a fragrant pepper aroma that was not too overpowering or too salty. The meat was tender and juicy inside. The lotus pork lard rice was surprisingly well balanced. You can smell the lotus fragrance but it does not feel too oily. The sambal helps to balance out the richness and the char siew was tender juicy and satisfying. The highlight was definitely the creamy prawn vermicelli. This was the best dish of the meal. The broth had a strong prawn umami flavour and the creaminess coated every bite of vermicelli beautifully. Very rich comforting and flavourful. The atmosphere was comfortable and suitable for a proper meal and conversation. Service was also top notch. You really get that warm Penang enthusiasm here. The only downside is that the prices are on the higher end and the portions are slightly smaller. If you are a big eater you may want to order more. Overall it was a very enjoyable meal and worth trying.

3 weeks agoAt Pineng, a restaurant that has won the Michelin award for the past 3 years, three of us enjoyed delicious food and local alcoholic cocktails, paying approximately 60 Euros. Reservations are a good idea. The place is very small and always full.
