Heritage Nyonya Kuih — A Taste of Old Penang

Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya Koay is a George Town institution where generations have perfected traditional Nyonya kuih and Peranakan snacks. Tucked off Lebuh Chulia / Jalan Masjid, the venue pairs a working kitchen and factory feel with a simple, nostalgia‑rich dining space that lets you watch craftsmanship in action. Expect more than twenty varieties — from silky seri muka and pulut tai tai with kaya to distinctive bengka ubi and rempah udang — each praised for fragrant, well‑balanced texture and authentic technique. The canteen next door offers savory options like asam laksa and nasi ulam that complement the kuih selection for a full taste tour of Peranakan flavours. Locals recommend arriving early to enjoy the widest variety and cooler conditions, and to bring cash for quick purchases of individual pieces. The atmosphere is humble and busy rather than polished, which adds to the charm of stepping into culinary history. With strong recognition and long‑standing local love, Moh Teng Pheow remains an essential stop for anyone exploring Penang’s heritage food scene, trusted by over 2,145 patrons who keep returning for its unmistakable, homemade taste.

Very cool place to visit. The dining area is behind the kitchen, where the kuihs are made. I love how they are one piece per order, so you can order a whole bunch of different ones to try. I especially want to mention the iced kopi—it was so strong and rich. It was so good we came back another day just to have their kopi again. (Tip: order the sugar—which is a condensed milk syrup—on the side so you can adjust the level of sweetness.)

The teh tarik wasn't too sweet. It was delicious iced. The Nyonya kueh came in both sweet and savory varieties. I thought it was quite tasty.

Kuih Bengka - Ubi and the Kuih Koci were sublime. Everything else was decent. Would highly recommend this place even if you don’t have a sweet tooth. Deserves the michelin stars it already has.
