LUM LAI Duck Meat Koay Teow Th’ng sits on Lebuh Cecil and has built a quiet reputation among locals and food hunters for one simple reason: an unforgettable bowl. This small, family-run restaurant serves a focused menu — essentially a choice between large or small — so there’s no indecision, only that first sip of the famously clear, sweet broth that keeps people coming back. Regulars rave about the silky yet springy kway teow and tender duck that carry deep, comforting flavour without heavy aftertaste; even the fishball and textured rice noodles earn approving nods. Practical tip: many customers find public transport easier than hunting for parking — one reviewer noted the cheap 302 bus ride from the jetty as a stress-free way to arrive.
The place has history: generations have kept the recipe alive, and the son now runs the stall, continuing a legacy stretching decades. Its modest prices — one visitor mentioned a small bowl around RM7.50 — make it a rare combination of culinary pedigree and everyday value. Whether you’re pursuing heritage eats or a soulful, no-frills meal in George Town, this spot feels like an intimate, authentic encounter with Penang’s hawker culture. Trusted by over 300 diners, LUM LAI is a must-visit for anyone chasing genuine duck koay teow that lingers in memory long after the bowl is cleared.

2 weeks agoThis stall is located in Cecil market where there are also many other food choices. Once you ordered, they practically prepared it in seconds. It’s self-service and you can decide where you want to seat but be sure to order drinks. If you don’t want to drink, there’s a minimum charge of RM1. It’s ok. I was just disappointed with the Koay Teow thng here. How can they be in the Michelin Bib Gourmand if this is not any better than all the other stalls I have tried on all my trips. I have eaten at most famous koay Teow Thng stalls and this is just disappointing. The koay teow noodle itself was thick and not slurpy. It didn’t have the texture of a good and almost translucent rice noodle. Lucky I was here for other things and I just wanna give this a try.

3 weeks agoIt’s simple and comforting. Nothing life changing but it doesn’t have to be. Rice noodles are soft and tender, not overcooked but just tender. Broth is flavourful and comforting.
