Melaka’s Must-Try Crab & Seafood on Jalan Merdeka

Harbor Village Crab House 海口人海鲜餐馆 is a friendly seafood restaurant tucked into 175, Jalan Merdeka in Taman Melaka Raya, where locals and visitors alike come for generous portions and bold, comforting flavors. Located in the heart of Melaka, this spot is trusted by over 148 diners for consistently fresh, meaty shellfish and attentive table service. Patrons rave that the crabs are packed with firm, plump meat — the sort you want when cracking open the pincer — and the kitchen shines with classics like the signature chilli crab that balances heat and tang perfectly. Equally memorable is the salted egg crab, rich with velvety yolk flavor that turns savory and addictive without any spice, a great choice for anyone who prefers milder tastes.

The menu goes beyond crab: groups regularly order assortments — marmite prawns, kam heong-style crabs, asam pedas stingray — and often receive a thoughtful finish of pudding, fruit or jelly on the house. Service here is consistently described as kind and attentive: staff are ready with recommendations, helpful without hovering, and quick to bring extra mantou or to suggest asking for fried rice to soak up every last bit of sauce. Prices feel very reasonable given the portion sizes and flavor, making it a reliable choice for celebrations, family dinners, or a casual seafood night out.

Whether you’re a returning customer who visits Melaka yearly or a first-timer exploring the city’s culinary scene, Harbor Village stands out for its fresh catch, generous plating and friendly vibe. Expect a bustling but comfortable dining room, sauces worth mopping up with rice or mantou, and set-ups that suit groups as well as couples. If you want a straightforward recommendation: go for the chilli crab and the salted egg crab, order a few shared plates like the marmite prawns or asam pedas stingray, and don’t skip the complimentary fruit to round off the meal. It’s a relaxed, satisfying seafood experience right on Jalan Merdeka — perfect for anyone craving hearty, well-executed coastal flavors in Melaka.

I discovered a gem during my trip to Malacca — a place I ended up visiting not once, but twice in just four days! The crabs here are not only fresh but also very reasonably priced. What impressed me most was how easy it was to remove the meat from the shell — big, juicy chunks, with some meat even sticking nicely to the shell. Every bite felt satisfying and worth it. We went on a weekday, so the restaurant wasn’t fully packed, which made the whole experience even better. The cozy and relaxed environment was perfect, especially with the hot Malacca weather — just sit back, enjoy, and indulge in delicious seafood. Another standout dish was the “Dragon Fish’s Touch.” The small bones were all edible, which made the dish both unique and easy to enjoy without worrying about picking bones. I also really enjoyed the Fu Rong egg. It may look like a simple dish at first, but it came in a big portion and was full of flavour. The addition of Chinese sausage and onions made the egg incredibly fragrant and tasty — one of those comforting dishes that surprises you with how good it is. I believe this is a family-run business, and the service really reflects that warmth. A young lady — possibly the boss’s daughter — was incredibly friendly and thoughtful. She even helped us order smarter, suggesting options like steaming half a fish instead of ordering a whole one, so we could try more dishes without over-ordering. During my 4D3N stay in Malacca, I came here twice: • First night: We ordered 2 XL crabs (RM$108) cooked in chilli sauce, paired with mantou (馒头) — an absolute perfect combination. • Second night: Came back again to try the Kam Heong style — equally delicious! Both styles were fantastic, and I’m already thinking about what to try next — Marmite crab and creamy butter crab are definitely on my list. “Wait for me, crab… I’ll definitely be back for you!” 🦀

Very good food, highly recommend the crab soup and salted egg crab. They were extremely generous with the crab meat in the soup. Went back twice to eat salted egg crab during our 3D2N stay. Our to-go place to have crab now in Melaka.

Food and services are good. Have to try to avoid peak hours if you are driving, as limited carpark.
