Authentic Ipoh Hawker Classics at Restoran Thean Chun 天津茶室

Restoran Thean Chun 天津茶室 is a must-visit for anyone exploring historic Old Town, beloved for its lively stall-house charm and time-tested flavors in Ipoh. Locals and visitors alike praise the aromatic bowls and comforting hawker staples here, making it a go-to spot when you want classic, no-frills Malaysian-Chinese comfort food in a bustling setting.

The star attraction is the classic Ipoh hor fun — a silky rice noodle in a delicate, savory broth that keeps customers coming back. Expect bright, clean flavors across the menu: from the chicken-slice prawn hor fun to chee cheong fun and popiah, plus side dishes like kangkong with cuttlefish and fried kueh teow from nearby stalls. Desserts are equally notable; the egg custard earns consistent praise for its creamy, panna-cotta–like texture and gentle caramel notes. If you prefer a morning pick-me-up, the iced white coffee is potent and well-balanced — perfect for starting a day of sightseeing.

The atmosphere is lively and decidedly hawker-style: busy, sometimes hot inside, and full of local energy. The shop sits opposite Concubine (Panglima) Lane and a short walk from Kong Heng Square, so it’s an ideal stop after exploring the area. A few practical notes from regulars: satay is sold in a minimum 10-skewer order, parking can be tight on weekends, and the place can fill up quickly — but most diners agree the food easily justifies a short wait. Trusted by over 2,200 diners, Thean Chun remains a reliable choice for authentic flavors and traditional Ipoh comfort food.

Warning: Some stalls here are cash only, which was a problem for cashless tourist like me. Kopi C was good. Sotong kangkung and cheese Cheong fun was curry style, which I've never had before. I'm told this is ipoh style. I found it strange there's no prawn paste in any of those dishes which is typical outside ipoh. The main attraction is the prawn noodles. It wasn't as good as the first time I had it. The broth felt diluted. But the prawns were springy and a good size. But I couldn't get over the weak broth. I doubt I'll be back here anytime soon. I just needed to convince my mom it's not that good anymore.

Satay comes in pork and chicken, and tastes great (RM15). The rice noodle rolls are different from those in Hong Kong; they're served cold and are delicious with sweet chili sauce.

On the eighth day of the Lunar New Year, I indulged in a food tour and ended up at the Tianjin Kopitiam in Ipoh. Across from Concubine Lane, I saw an old man chopping poached chicken, so I decided to try the Ipoh Chicken Shredded Rice Noodles. This old restaurant, a taste passed down from the 50s and 60s generation, is definitely worth recommending. The shredded chicken was fresh, and the rice noodles were smooth. Generally, you shouldn't expect too much from the ambiance of an old restaurant.
